Project Summary
Costa Rica’s first commercial deployment of 100% electric heavy-duty truck tractors began with CABUS importing 6 electric truck tractors for Ingenio Cutris in San Carlos. The trucks were assigned to sugarcane transport between farms and the mill in Boca de Arenal, demonstrating that electric heavy-duty freight can operate in rural, productive and demanding conditions, not only in urban delivery routes.
The project has since scaled beyond the Cutris pilot: CABUS has imported other 11 zero-emission truck tractors in Costa Rica. The new fleet includes 2 units in Cartago with Grupo Coris, 7 new 50-ton units for Piñas Cultivadas in Pocosol, and additional units expected for Terumo in El Coyol and El Colono in Limón. The most recent 50-ton DAYUN trucks carry 600 kWh batteries and have an estimated range of 450 km per charge. Operators report around 80% savings when comparing fuel expenditure against electricity, before maintenance savings.
The Cutris deployment is the anchor case: it proved the operational feasibility of heavy-duty electrification in an agricultural corridor, reduced noise and exhaust exposure around Boca de Arenal, and created evidence for replication in other Costa Rican companies and, according to project communications, for study and replication in Guatemala and other Latin American markets.
