Climate Week NYC — Transportation Decarbonization events | 9.18.23-9.20.23

Sep 18, 2023 - Sep 20, 2023

Join us at Climate Week NYC to discuss the future of transport decarbonization. The following events are brought to you partners CALSTART/Drive to Zero, Accelerating to Zero Coalition, Sustainable Freight Buyers’ Alliance (Smart Freight Centre and CALSTART), Transport Decarbonization Alliance, Climate Group, International Council for Clean Transportation, Berkeley Center for Law, Energy, and Environment, UC Davis Institute for Transportation Studies, and the Netherlands.

The great transport divide: Harnessing collective efforts for electric vehicles in the Global South

Open to the public (streaming available)

September 18th, 11:55am – 12:50pm ET | Etc.venues, 360 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10017

Road transport is responsible for 15% of CO2 emissions worldwide. As we increase the speed of transport electrification, we must make sure the switch to EVs happens globally and the benefits to air quality and health are distributed equally. Looking to Latin America and India, it’s clear that the switch presents both challenges and opportunities. Collaboration between governments and the private sector will be critical to the Global South’s electrification journey. In this session, we will explore:

  • How are governments and private companies coming together to bridge the divide between North and South?
  • What can we learn from pioneering work already taking place across Latin America and India?
  • How can we avoid repeating injustices and ensure a just transition to EVs across the globe?

Road to success: Picking up the pace of electrification in the heavy-duty freight sector

Open to the public (streaming available)

September 18th, 1:45pm – 2:40pm ET | Etc.venues, 360 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10017

The heavy-duty road freight sector represents 4% of vehicles on the road globally, yet is responsible for 5% of all CO2 emissions. That’s greater than the contribution of the aviation and ocean shipping sectors combined, with highly negative consequences for the climate and our health. This session will convene players from across the sector – manufacturers, transport shippers, transport buyers and the public sector – that all have a vital role in the future of clean transport. In this session, we’ll discuss:

  • What are the operational benefits that are being captured by business leaders today?
  • How do we identify the outstanding barriers and the regulation that can help to accelerate action?

Accelerating Global Collaboration on Zero Emission Trucks

Invite only – lunch included

September 19th, 10:00am – 2:00pm ET | (Paris Room) Jay Conference Bryant Park – 109 W 39th St, New York, NY 10018 (TBC)

An invite-only roundtable with policy-makers, experts, and industry stakeholders from around the world on how to navigate stakeholder perspectives on zero-emission truck (ZET) regulations. The event will  convene a wide range of the ZET ecosystem – local, national, and regional government, private fleets and trucking associations, labor, manufacturing and supply chain, researchers, civil society, community activists, and NGOs. At this interactive working session, attendees will have the opportunity to join multiple rounds of topic-specific table discussions led by issue experts, with the goal of enabling better uptake of the extensive analysis and policy work already accomplished. Table topics will include ZET financing, infrastructure, technology readiness, regulation and more. The conversations will focus on two elements:

  • Prioritization: identify the questions policymakers hear most often and the top challenges stakeholders need addressed
  • Matchmaking: determine if these questions/challenges already have answers/solutions in existing analysis or policy design or if further work is needed

If you are interested in attending, please reach out to j.helf@berkeley.edu. This event is hosted by Transport Decarbonisation Alliance in partnership with CALSTART/Drive to Zero, the Netherlands, Climate Group, the International Council for Clean Transportation, the Berkeley Center for Law, Energy, and Environment, and the UC Davis Institute for Transportation Studies.

Accelerating to a Zero-Emission Transportation Sector

Open to the public (register here)

September 19th, 3:00pm – 5:00pm ET | (Dubai Room) Jay Conference Bryant Park – 109 W 39th St, New York, NY 10018

Signatories to the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Declaration signed on to the global pledge to ensure that all new car and van sales be zero emission by 2040 globally, and by 2035 in leading markets. This level of ambition is critical to avoiding the worst impacts from climate change and will help tackle air pollution, reduce oil dependency, and deliver new jobs. This session will showcase current progress of ZEV Declaration signatories in reaching this ambitious target and further discuss the importance of a zero-emission transportation sector. Featured senior leaders from across the eight distinct signatory categories will share key insights from their ZEV transitions, including lessons learned and their vision for the future. During this session, we will:

  • Announce new signatories to the ZEV Declaration
  • Feature an industry-leading announcement from a major automotive manufacturer
  • Learn about key ZEV transition insights via an interactive panel discussion
