Zero Emission Trucks Are Here- how to finance the transition?

May 24, 2023 4:00 pm CET

This double session will provide two empowering events on Financing the transition to zero- emission trucks: 1) a High-level inspirational panel, from 16:00 to 16:40, 2) an interactive workshop, from 16:40 to 18:00.

ITF23 creates a unique opportunity for the transport community to unite and align on climate action. Logistics emissions are set to increase 42% by 2050 according to the International Transport Forum and the OECD, contributing to global climate change. It is time to align with all relevant stakeholders towards sector decarbonization and start scaling-up zero-emission transport.

Since COP26, 27 countries committed to working towards 100% new sales of medium- and heavy- duty zero emission trucks (ZETs) in 2040, with an interim goal of 30% in 2030. In order to turn this ambition into action, two challenging items that have clearly stood out are the need for coordination between transport and energy agencies, and how to finance the transition. The total cost of ownership of nearly all use cases will be competitive by 2030 at the latest. However, without long-term energy strategy and effective financing solutions the upfront investments required for ZETs and infrastructure will remain cost-prohibitive and limit the transition. Since ZETs are reaching cost parity faster than previously predicted, an accelerated transition is not only important, but also within reach. The high-level inspirational panel will bring together ambitious leaders from the public and private sector side to discuss how transport and energy agencies can work together, share how they are overcoming financial challenges, and what opportunities they see to accelerate this process. The high-level inspirational panel will be followed by an 80-minute workshop to facilitate conversations among key stakeholders to explore pathways forward.
