Drive to Zero Newsletter – September 2023

Dear Drive to Zero™ Supporters:

CALSTART Global Director Stephanie Kodish moderates a zero-emission transport panel at Climate Week NYC

Climate Week NYC marked the launch of the Fleet Electrification Coalition where we and our partners confirmed strong demand for zero-emission trucks. The zero-emission transport community deepened our connections; explored new and innovative strategies, policies, and programs to accelerate zero-emission transport; and collectively confirmed our ambitions to accelerate a zero-emission transport future. We appreciate the Drive to Zero community’s participation in our (and our partner) events. We hope to see you at COP 28 UAE, where we will present new tools, announce new partnerships, tell your stories, and unveil new Global MOU commitments. Together, we have the power to transform transport and transform our world and climate for the better. See you at COP!

ZETI Survey—Time is Running Out to Share Your Experience!

Your experience with the Zero-Emission Technology Inventory (ZETI) is an invaluable tool that provides a current and shared knowledge base for worldwide commercially available offerings of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Please take our survey and share your thoughts so we can continue to improve this resource. The survey should take only a few minutes to complete. It will close at 5:00 p.m. PT this Saturday, September 30, 2023. Thank you in advance for your time and feedback.

Have a Compelling, Authentic Story About Transitioning to Zero-Emission Trucks?

We know how hard you’ve worked to electrify your fleet, shift your business to increase or be entirely build in ZETs and spearheaded efforts in your community and on the international stage to enable transition to zero emitting vehicles. WYour story needs to be on a global stage to showcase what the transition journey and its success looks like. We are collecting and sharing stories that shine a spotlight on efforts made by fleets and other stakeholders transitioning to zero-emission operations. News Updates

The annual Climate Week events in New York drew much-needed attention to the current climate emergency that has contributed to humanitarian disasters like the recent extreme floods in Libya and Greece. Thankfully, momentum for initiatives such as the Global Memorandum of Understanding on Zero Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehiclescontinues to grow, and recent headlines show the progress made by industry and policymakers to accelerate adoption of zero-emission vehicles- a vital climate solution.

Leading global companies unite to propel electric truck adoption in the United States and Europe and signal demand for 60,000 electric heavy duty trucks by 2030

The Fleet Electrification Coalition (FEC), launched by Smart Freight Centre and CALSTART, surveyed leading global companies and announced a comprehensive demand signal that can be shared across utilities, policymakers, OEMs, and charge point operators.

Malta invests €20 million in new electric buses and charging depot

Malta, the fourth most densely populated country in the world, has decided to invest €20 million in electrifying its public transportation system. Malta introduced free transportation for the island’s inhabitants starting last October, and their recent purchase of 30 battery-electric buses and installation of a charging depot are projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70%.

Schaeffler and VDL to develop autonomous shuttles with systems provided by Mobileye

Schaeffler and VDL announced they will be working together to design and build self-driving electric shuttles for public transportation, with the goal of manufacturing the vehicles on a commercial scale. Street testing of the self-driving shuttles is slated to begin in 2025, and the companies hope to produce thousands of vehicles annually starting in 2030.

Rural areas prioritised in funding scheme for hundreds of electric buses

Britain is investing up to £129 million in zero-emission buses, and Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced that the first £25 million of the funds will be dedicated to serving rural communities. Harper stated that “this additional funding will improve journeys for even more passengers, reaching those in the most remote areas.”

Mexico Can Become a Leader in Clean Transportation

The proposed National Electric Mobility Strategy (ENME) envisions 50% of new vehicle sales in Mexico to be zero-emission by 2030 and 100% of light vehicles and buses by 2040. CALSTART’s Drive to Zero research found that Mexico is also well-positioned to aim for 100% zero-emission trucks by 2040, in line with the 27 leading nations that have signed the Global MOU. With freight being a major contributor to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, Mexico needs to ensure that trucks are included in the targets and receive adequate policy support (original publication made possible by GIZ México)
